CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Niners concluded the Hokie Invitational on a high note as several athletes produced season-best performances at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Virginia, Saturday afternoon.
"We had another very good meet at Virginia Tech with another school record and numerous top ten all time performances and season's bests," said head coach Robert Olesen. "We've had three good competitive meets in the heart of our season and watching the meet this weekend it's clear that we need to progress our training into pre-championship mode with two meets remaining to identify and fine tune our conference championship travel squad."
The 49er men placed four in the 800m and were led by Sean Kluttz who won the event (1:54.18). Michael Tamayo was third (1:55.70), Christian Norbye followed in fifth (1:56.96), and Marcus Rinehardt placed ninth (1:59.71). On the women's side, Maraya Slatter was fourth (2:12.23) and Rachel Miller was eighth. (2:17.86). Slatter and Miller each turned in season-best times.
Joann Blakney was third overall but finished as the second collegiate finisher in the 200m (24.62). Khryan Shank also placed second in the 200m with a time of 21.89. LeRoy Rouse was sixth (22.25) and Jamil-Muhammed Ray was ninth (22.53).
Trey McRae and Coye Still performed well in both the high jump and long jump. McRae was third in the high jump, clearing 6'10.25 to set a personal record and Still finished fifth with a leap of 6'4.25. In the long jump, McRae led Charlotte and took third (22'8), followed by Still in fourth (22'3.75).
David Eubanks set a PR in the 600m with his fifth place finish of 1:23.56 moving to fourth on the all-time top ten list. Christopher Muggler was sixth (1:24.23) and his time now ranks fifth all-time. Mike Cross was eight with a mark of 1:26.53 that is sixth all-time.
Charlotte performed well in both the men's and women's 5000m run. Ross Roberson finished third (15:08.67) and moved to seventh on the all-time list. Cody Hodgins was fifth with a time of 15:30.15. Hana Sutchar took third (17:48.07) moving to eighth all-time. Jen Molke was sixth (18:28.02) and Katie Holloway finished seventh (18:46.13).
Charlotte returns back to action on February 1 when it travels to Winston-Salem for the JDL Hilton Invitational.
