CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball
team is back on the road in conference play when it travels to St. Louis, Mo.,
to face long-time foe Saint Louis at 2 p.m. Eastern Sunday. It marks the first
of two-straight away Atlantic 10 matchups for the Niners.
Charlotte brings a 13-4 overall and 2-1 league ledger into the meeting, after
picking up back-to-back wins in its most recent A-10 contests. The Niners
knocked off Rhode Island Jan. 16 and Xavier four days later to post victories
in five of their last six outings.
The defense has helped lift the 49ers recently, holding six-straight opponents
under 60 points. Charlotte foes during the stretch are scoring just 48.3 points
per clip, nearly eight points on average less than their overall season effort.
Offensively, senior Jennifer Hailey continues to pace the Charlotte scoring
with 15.1 points per game. She has climbed 10 spots on the school's all-time
scoring list, moving from 23rd at the beginning of the campaign to
13th, with her sights set on current assistant coach Sabrina Gregory
(2005-08), who is 12th.
Hailey also hauls in an Atlantic 10-high 11.3 rebounds per contest, edging out
teammate Amanda Dowe's 11.1 average on the glass.
The 49ers own a 5-0 road record heading into Sunday's meeting, matching their
total away triumphs from a year ago. The Niners completed the non-conference
road slate 4-0, marking just the second time in program history they went
unbeaten during true road non-conference games.
Saint Louis, under the direction of first-year head coach Lisa Stone, rallied
to defeat Richmond Wednesday in its most recent outing. The Billikens bring an
8-11 overall and 2-2 A-10 record into Sunday's matchup at the Chaifetz Arena,
where they are 4-4 this season.
Lorreal Jones paces the squad with 11.9 points per game, the team's lone
double-figure scorer. She also tops SLU with 7.8 rebounds per contest after
posting her second season double-double in the triumph against the Spiders
earlier this week.
Charlotte owns a commanding 21-8 edge in the all-time series, which has seen
the two programs meet every year since 1995-96, when they joined Conference USA
together. The two schools then moved to the Atlantic 10 side-by-side for the
2005-06 campaign and have continued the series.
Last season, Saint Louis picked up wins in two of the three meetings as each
team won on its home floor and the Billikens collected the victory in an
Atlantic 10 Tournament matchup.
