CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte turned in several top five performances on the opening day of the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., at Rector Field House Friday evening.
Katrina Wright highlighted the evening by setting another indoor record in the weight throw with a toss of 55'3. Wright, who finished sixth in the event, broke her previous school record of 55'2.75 which she set at the UAB Blazer Invitational a few weeks ago.
Joann Blakney won the 60m dash with a time of 7.43. Briauna Jones took sixth (7.63). Khyran Shank was third in the men's 60m with a time of 6.83. Blakney, Jones, and Shank all posted season-best times in the 60m. In the 60m hurdles, Alvonna Blakney was fifth (8.60) and posted her top time of the season, which is tied third on the all-time list. Cordell Livingston was fourth on the men's side with a time of 8.12.
The Niner men dominated the triple jump and were led by Livingston who finished second with a leap of 48'7.25. Anthony Campbell was third (48'0.50). Charlotte also saw great performances in the women's triple jump as Jones finished third (39'10) and LeAnna Morrison was sixth with a season-best leap of 39'3.25.
Brian Hamilton took fourth in the 300m with a time of 35.16 which is third on the Charlotte all-time top ten list. Christopher Boyd was fifth (35.20) and his time is tied for fourth all-time. Jamil-Muhammed Ray was eighth with a time of 35.70.
Kevin Calhoun was second in the pole vault (15'1) followed by Robert Wilson in third (14'1.25). Sara Fell and Jana Eatman finished seventh and eighth respectively in the pole vault and cleared 10'2 for season-best marks. Allyson Sherlock was ninth (9'8).
Jake Deaton placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 58'6, which moves to third on the all-time top ten list. John Celona's toss (54'1) was good for eighth place. Celona's toss was a season-best and moved up to fourth on the all-time list.
In the 3000m run Morgan Richards led a trio of Niners with a time of 10:08.26 to finish eighth. Her time is a season-best and is ninth on the all-time list. Tiffany Lang (10:30.03) and Kristen Stout (10:33.29) were ninth and tenth respectively.
In other distance events, Jenna Christensen was ninth in the 1000m (2:59.67) and Taylor Carcella (2:59.83) finished tenth. Maria Ruiz was the third collegiate finisher in the mile (5:03.34), posting a season-best time. On the men's side, Zach Greth was fifth (4:24.16), followed by Daweet Dagnachew in sixth (4:26.40).
The Hokie Invitational resumes on Saturday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
