CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Records continued to fall on the second day of the Virginia Tech Invitational as senior Jake Deaton set a new indoor school record after winning the shot put with a throw of 57'11 at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Saturday afternoon.
Deaton broke his previous school record of 57'9 which he set in 2010 by two inches.
Sophomore T'Sheila Mungo who set a record in yesterday's 500m run (1:11.03), continued her solid efforts on Saturday after winning the 400m dash with a time of 54.97 for a personal best mark.
In the long jump, junior Briauna Jones finished second with a leap of 19'0.50. Also gaining a second place finish for the Niners was the 4x400m relay team (Anthony Bynum, Cordell Livingston, Christopher Boyd, and Chris Tate) who came in with a time of 3:16.61. Tate also finished eighth in the 400m dash (50.23).
In the distance events, freshman Tiffany Lang (18:35.52), senior Ashley Edwards (19:06.84), and junior Katie Holloway (19:11.53) finished second, third, and fourth respectively. Freshman Morgan Richards was fifth in the 800m run (2:20.37).
"This meet was just what we were looking for at this point of the season," said head coach Robert Olesen. "We gained some needed traction after the winter break and have built up a little momentum to carry us into the Hokie Invitational next week. We had a number of impressive results with two school records and some top 50 national performances. Even where we didn't necessarily get the result we were looking for, in many cases it was evident that the athlete is on the verge of making significant progress and we'll be looking for that next week."
The 49ers will return to Blacksburg next weekend to compete in the Hokie Invitational beginning on Friday, Jan. 26.
