The Charlotte 49ers (15-2, A-10: 3-0) play Atlantic 10 foe Richmond (11-7, A-10: 1-2) on the road, Saturday, January 19 at 6 pm.
The 49ers are currently 15-2 on the season. The last time the 49ers began the season 15-2 was the 1976-77 season. The 49ers began that year 17-2. The 49ers captured the Sun Belt Conference Championship and reached the Final Four that season.
Chris Braswell leads the 49ers in scoring at 11.6 points per game. Braswell is second on the team in rebounding at 5.9 boards per game. Braswell is one of only eight players in school history with 1,000 career points and 750 career rebounds. DeMario Mayfield is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game. Mayfield leads the 49ers in scoring in A-10 games at 15 points per game. Mayfield scored a season-high18 points off the bench against Fordham for his eleventh double-figure scoring game of the season. Pierria Henry is third on the team in scoring at 8.8 points per game. Henry averages 11.3 points per game in A-10 play. Henry leads the team in assists with 57 and steals with 49. Henry ranks among the nation's leaders in steals. Willie Clayton is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.5 points per game. Clayton leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 boards per game. Terrence Williams is fifth on the team in scoring at 7.4 points per game. Williams, who has started all 17 games this season, has recorded five double-figure scoring games this year.
Darion Clark, who scored 11 points off the bench in the Fordham game, averages 6.8 points per game. Clark is third on the team in rebounding at 5.2 boards per game. Denzel Ingram, who has started the last 14 games, is sixth on the team in scoring at 6.2 points per game. E. Victor Nickerson averages 5.1 points per game. JT Thompson, who scored a season-high 12 points against Fordham, averages 4.7 points per game. Ivan Benkovic has knocked down at least one three point field goal in five games this season.
This game will mark the 18th meeting between Charlotte and Richmond, who leads the all-time series 10-7. The two teams split their two meetings last season. Charlotte defeated Richmond, 75-70, in Halton Arena, January 4, 2012. Former Niner standout Javarris Barnett led the 49ers with 22 points. Braswell scored 13 points and Henry scored 10 points in that game. Richmond defeated Charlotte, 53-52, in their last meeting which came at Richmond, February 18, 2012. Braswell led the 49ers with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
