The Charlotte 49ers (13-2, A-10: 1-0) play Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island (5-9, A-10: 0-1) on the road, Saturday, January 12 at 2 pm.
Chris Braswell leads the 49ers in scoring at 12.1 points per game. Braswell is second on the team in rebounding at 6.1 boards per game. Braswell is one of only eight players in school history with 1,000 career points and 750 career rebounds. DeMario Mayfield is second on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game. Mayfield scored 10 points off the bench against La Salle for his ninth double-figure scoring game of the season. Pierria Henry, who scored a career-high 20 points against La Salle, is third on the team in scoring at 9.1 points per game. Henry leads the team in assists with 53 and steals with 45. Henry ranks among the nation's leaders in steals. Willie Clayton is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.7 points per game. Clayton was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for his 16 points and 16 rebounds performance in the UNC Asheville game, January 2. Clayton leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 boards per game. Terrence Williams is fifth on the team in scoring at 7.7 points per game. Williams, who has started all 15 games this season, has recorded five double-figure scoring games this year. Denzel Ingram, who has started the last 12 games, is sixth on the team in scoring at 6.8 points per game.
Darion Clark, who scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench in the La Salle game, averages 6.6 points per game. Clark is third on the team in rebounding at 5.5 boards per game. E. Victor Nickerson, who scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds against La Salle, averages 5.4 points per game. JT Thompson has given the 49ers quality minutes off the bench this season. He averages 4.2 points per game. Ivan Benkovic has knocked down at least one three point field goal in five games this season.
This game will mark the 12th meeting between Charlotte and Rhode Island. The 49ers lead the all-time series, 6-5. However, Charlotte is 1-4 all-time at Rhode Island. The 49ers only victory at Rhode Island was a 74-64 win, March 8, 2008. Former 49ers standout Leemire Goldwire scored 34 points in that game. The 49ers lost to Rhode Island, 71-70 in overtime in their last game at Rhode Island, February 12, 2011. Braswell scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in that game. Charlotte defeated Rhode Island, 73-66, in their last meeting which came in Halton Arena, February 11, 2012. Former 49ers standout Javarris Barnett led the 49ers with 18 points. Mayfield recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
