CHARLOTTE, N.C. - College Sports Madness has announced the 2013 Madness Atlantic 10 Softball Preseason All-Conference teams which features three Charlotte players.
As a freshman last season, Betancourt was selected to the A-10 All-Rookie team. She led the Charlotte pitching staff with a 15-14 record and 2.93 earned run average (ERA). She appeared in 35 games and made 27 starts with 20 complete games. Betancourt posted three shutouts and struck out 127 batters. She held opponents to a .271 batting average. She also contributed to the Niners' offense and was an A-10 Rookie of the Week (April 9, 2012).
Gwaltney, a four-year member of the 49ers has been essential to Charlotte's success. Last year in her junior season, she broke the Charlotte single-season and career records for home runs. The left fielder led the team in almost every offensive category, including runs scored (39), hits (52), home runs (14), RBIs (40), total bases (104), and slugging percentage (.608). She was second on the squad in batting average (.304), doubles (8), walks (28), and on base percentage (.404). She led the 49ers with a .348 batting average in conference play. Gwaltney led the A-10 in home runs and ranked second in the conference in slugging percentage and tied for second in RBIs. She was an A-10 First Team All-Conference selection, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Second Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region member and the College Sports Madness Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.
Sophomore Alex Rogers was a second team selection to the 2013 Madness A-10 Softball Preseason All-Conference team. She started every game at center field and led the 49ers in batting average (.313), triples (2), walks (40), and on-base percentage (.449). Rogers tied for first in hits (52) and was second in runs scored (34). Her defensive efforts yielded a fielding percentage of .970, committing just two errors on the season. She shattered the Charlotte single-season record in walks drawn, and was ranked nationally in that category throughout the season. Rogers is second all-time in school history among freshmen in runs scored, third in hits and seventh in batting average. She was an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week (February, 27, 2012), an A-10 All-Rookie Team selection, and member of the College Sports Madness Atlantic 10 Second Team.
