Charlotte, N.C. -- Charlotte 49ers head football coach Brad Lambert has announced a pair of players that will transfer into the 49ers program from their respective four-year colleges. Mikel Hunter, a senior wide receiver at Air Force and CJ Crawford, a red-shirt junior tight end at Marshall have both signed financial aid agreements with the 49ers to begin playing football this spring. Both players will compete as seniors with just one year of eligibility remaining.
"With the addition of these two guys we satisfied our need to continue to put age on our team," Lambert said. "We added some much needed senior leadership to our team."
Hunter, a 5-9 receiver who did not play this past season, made 14 starts as a sophomore and junior at Air Force. He made 19 catches in his 39-game, three-year career for 350 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 32 rushes for 380 yards and three touchdowns. He was third on the team as a junior with 14 catches for 244 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown reception vs. South Dakota and a 34-yard touchdown grad vs. Tennessee State. In that season-opening South Dakota game, he also had an 80-yard touchdown run on Air Force's first offensive play of the year. It was the fourth-longest run in school history. In his sophomore year, he had two carries for 34 yards in the Independence Bowl victory vs. Georgia Tech. Hunter, a native of Rockdale, Ga., attended Heritage High School, earning four letters in track and two letters in football.
"He's a senior wideout that brings alot of speed to the table," Lambert said. "He has a lot of experience playing at a high level at Air Force. We can throw him the ball or hand him the ball - he's done both for them. We're excited to have him join our program."
Crawford, a 6-2 tight end out of Huntington, W. Va., played in 12 games as a red-shirt junior, making 11 catches for 107 yards. As a sophomore he pulled in 21 passes for 175 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on a three-yard pass at Louisville. He also caught five passes in the Herd's Beef O'Brady's Bowl win over FIU. He had a 32-yard TD reception against SMU as a red-shirt freshman in 2010. He was an all-state selection who recorded 3200 all-purpose yards in his last two seasons and was rated as West Virginia's number one prospect by several recruiting services. He graduated from Marshall in December and will pursue graduate school with the 49ers.
"CJ plays in the H-Back spot and we think we can move him around," Lambert said. "We can use him as a wideout, a tight end, a back. He's athletic and can stretch the field for us and he brings alot of versatility to our offense."
