Charlotte, NC - Five members of the nationally-ranked and Atlantic 10 Champion Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team were named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region teams. Midfielders Tyler Gibson and Donnie Smith and forward Giuseppe Gentile were named first-team All-Region. While, goalkeeper Klay Davis and defender Thomas Allen earned second-team All-Region honors.
The five 49ers to earn All-Region honors marks the most players in the program's history to earn All-Region honors in the same season. This also marks the fifth time in the last seven years that the 49ers have had at least three players earn NSCAA All-Region honors. With Smith, Gibson and Gentile earning first-team All-Region honors it marks the second straight season that the 49ers have had three first-team All-Region selections.
Gentile, who earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors this season, lead the 49ers in assists with seven. He finished second on the team with nine goals. He tallied game-winning goals against Kentucky, George Washington and UAB in the NCAA Tournament. In October, he scored three goals and tallied two assists in the same weekend in Charlotte's victories over Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For his performance in those two games, he was named TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Player of the Week as well as Atlantic 10 Player of the Week.
Gibson, who earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors for the third straight season, was named first-team All-Region for the second straight year. Gibson was also a member of the Hermann Award watch list. This season, Gibson finished tied for second on the team with six assists. He also scored three goals including game-winning goals against Stony Brook and Duquesne.
Smith, who earned All-Atlantic 10 honors three times in his career, was named Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year this past season. Smith earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2012 and 2010. He was a second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2011. Smith scored four goals and recorded four assists this past season. Smith scored game-winning goals against South Carolina, Richmond and Saint Louis.
Davis, who earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors this season, joins former 49ers standouts Jon Busch (1996) and Aidan Heaney (1988 and 1991) as 49ers goalkeepers that have earned All-Region honors. Davis finished the season with 8.5 shutouts and a 0.79 goals against average which is the second lowest single-season goals against average in school history. This past season, Davis was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Week after helping the 49ers post road shutouts against Saint Louis and Butler.
Allen, who earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors this season, along with Davis anchored a 49ers defense which recorded nine shutouts and limited 18 foes to a goal or less. Allen, who earned several National Team of the Week honors, finished the season with two goals and one assist. He scored the game-winning goal in the 49ers' 1-0 double overtime win over #14 Coastal Carolina, August 27.
