CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers (8-0), who are off to the best start in school history, return to Halton Arena to play Central Michigan (4-3), Saturday, December 8 at 2 pm. Free admission to the game for youth (17-and-under) but everyone must go to the ticket office to get a ticket for the game. At halftime of the game, several mascots from the area will play a game.
Chris Braswell leads the 49ers in scoring at 15.1 points per game. Braswell has recorded six double-figure scoring games off the bench this season. Braswell led the 49ers in scoring in Wednesday's 73-69 win over Davidson with 15 points off the bench. Terrence Williams is second on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per game. Williams, who has started all eight games this season, has recorded four double-figure scoring games this season. DeMario Mayfield is third on the team in scoring at 9.2 points per game. He has recorded four double-figure scoring games off the bench this season. Pierria Henry is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.1 points per game. He leads the team in assists with 33 and steals with 22. Henry, who scored the 49ers last six points at Davidson, scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out five assists and recorded four steals at Davidson. Willie Clayton, who has recorded two straight double-figure scoring games, is fifth on the team in scoring at 8.0 points per game. Clayton scored 12 points against Davidson. Darion Clark, who scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds at Davidson, is sixth on the team in scoring at 7.3 points per game. Braswell, Clark and Clayton are tied for the team lead in rebounding at 6.3 boards per game. Denzel Ingram, who has started the last five games, is seventh on the team in scoring at 6.5 points per game. Ingram leads the team with nine three-point field goals made. JT Thompson has given the 49ers quality minutes off the bench this season. He averages 4.4 points per game. E. Victor Nickerson, who scored four points off the bench at Davidson, also averages 4.4 points per game. Ivan Benkovic has knocked down at least one three point field goal in four of the last five games.
This game will mark the third meeting between Charlotte and Central Michigan and the first meeting the two teams in Charlotte. Charlotte has won the previous two meetings. The first meeting between the two teams came in the 49ers first-ever NCAA Tournament game as the Charlotte defeated Central Michigan, 91-86, in overtime in Bloomington, Indiana, March 13, 1977. The 49ers advanced to the Final Four that season. Last season, the 49ers defeated Central Michigan, 77-75, in double overtime on the road, November 15. Charlotte had three players record double-doubles in that game. Braswell scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Javarris Barnett scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Mayfield scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Central Michigan is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The 49ers are 6-5 all-time against the MAC. Charlotte has previously played Mid-American Conference schools: Central Michigan, Kent State, Toledo and Western Michigan.
