CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's
basketball team returns to the hardwood for its third game in a week when it
plays host to Stetson at 7 p.m. Saturday in the second of two Niners hoops
contests inside Halton Arena. The game will be the last for the green and white
before taking 10 days off for final exams and the conclusion of the fall
The 49ers are coming off a hard-fought, 63-58 victory at UNC Wilmington
Wednesday night. Junior Ny Hammonds, who is the national leader in assists per
game for the second-straight week, topped the squad with a career-best 21
points. She was the lone Charlotte player in double-figure scoring as the team
improved to 5-2 on the year, including a perfect 3-0 road mark.
Senior Jennifer Hailey continues to boast the team's top scoring average at
14.3 points per game, tallying an even 100 points through the season's first
seven contests. She is joined in double figures by three other players, including
senior Amanda Dowe (12.9 ppg), senior Jai Forney (10.4) and Hammonds (10.3).
The other starter, sophomore Hillary Sigmon, is next with 6.6 points per game.
She has hit a team-high eight 3-pointers and is a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity
Stetson owns a 4-3 ledger entering Saturday's meeting. The Hatters, a member of
the Atlantic Sun Conference, were picked to win their league by the coaches in
the preseason and place second in the media poll.
The DeLand, Fla., school placed three players on the preseason all-conference
team and Victoria McGowan earned the A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year nod.
She has lived up to the billing thus far, leading the squad with 15.8 points and
7.2 rebounds per game.
Head coach Lynn Bria is in her fifth season at the helm of the Stetson program,
which has won three in a row, all at home. All four of the team's wins this
year have come at the Edmunds Center.
The two programs have met just once previously, a 92-55 Charlotte victory at
the Tallahassee Hilton Classic in Tallahassee, Fla., December 1, 1989. The win
put the 49ers in the tournament's championship the following day against host
Florida State and the Niners captured the crown, their only win against the
Seminoles in that series.
The victory also played a part in the Charlotte's 1989-90 Sun Belt
regular-season championship squad advancing to the WNIT, earning the first
postseason bid in school history.
