CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis program has announced the addition of two players for the 2013-14 academic year, head coach Michaela Gorman unveiled Monday afternoon. The Niners welcome Macy Vonderschmidt of McKinney, Texas, and Willemijn Witkam of Beesd, The Netherlands.

"We're really excited to bring in two really good tennis players," Gorman said. "We were able to watch them both through the recruiting process. They are both quality players and quality people. We're excited to get them here."

Vonderschmidt, a four-star recruit according to the website, attends Boyd High School in McKinney and trains at the T Bar M Tennis Academy in Dallas. She has been ranked as high as No. 134 nationally this year and has tallied three wins over five-star and eight against other four-star players from the same website. She reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 UTSA National Open in May in Norman, Okla. For the U16s, she has been listed as high as the No. 6 spot in Texas.

Witkam is among the Top 100 players in the Women's Open Rankings for The Netherlands. She has been listed in the Top 15 in her age group nationally and has won many Category 3 tournaments throughout her home country. She also has participated in the semifinals of three A tournaments in The Netherlands.

The pair will don the green and white for the first time in 2013-14.

Gorman's current 49ers squad will return to the courts when it opens the spring dual match campaign Jan. 25 in Davidson, N.C., for a neutral-site meeting with Radford. Charlotte's home opener at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex will be held the next day, at 1 p.m. Jan. 26, against North Carolina Central. It will be the first of nine home spring contests to play at the Niners' on-campus facility.
