CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers (6-0), who are off to one of the best starts in school history, play in-state rival East Carolina (5-0) in Halton Arena, Saturday, December 1 at 7 pm.
The 49ers return to Halton Arena after capturing the Great Alaska Shootout title last week with wins over Texas State, Oral Roberts and Northeastern. Pierria Henry was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. While, Chris Braswell and Terrence Williams earned All-Tournament honors for their performances in the Shootout.
Braswell leads the 49ers in scoring at 14.6 points per game. He also leads the 49ers in rebounding at 6.6 boards per game. Williams is second on the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game. DeMario Mayfield is third on the team in scoring at 10.3 points per game. Mayfield scored a team game-high 17 points off the bench in the 49ers win over Oral Roberts last week. Henry is fourth on the team in scoring at eight points per game. He leads the team in assists with 26 and steals with 18. Denzel Ingram, who scored 11 points against Texas State, is fifth on the team in scoring at 7.5 points per game. Willie Clayton, who has started every game this season, averages 6.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Darion Clark, who scored 10 points against Northeastern, averages 6.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. E. Victor Nickerson, who has missed the last three games with an ankle injury, is expected to play against East Carolina. He averages six points per game. JT Thompson has given the 49ers quality minutes off the bench. He averages 4.8 points per game. Ivan Benkovic came off the bench and knocked down several crucial three-pointers for the 49ers last week in Alaska.
This game will mark the 21st meeting between Charlotte and East Carolina. The 49ers hold a 14-6 series lead. Charlotte is 7-2 all-time at home against East Carolina. The 49ers defeated East Carolina, 76-64, in their last meeting which came at East Carolina, December 3, 2011. Charlotte has won the last seven meetings between the two teams at home. Charlotte defeated East Carolina, 80-68, in their last meeting in Halton Arena, December 2, 2009. In that game, former 49ers standout DiJuan Harris led three 49ers in double-figures with 17 points. Braswell scored three points and grabbed eight rebounds in the game.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will join forces with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves to host the ninth annual Toys for Tots drive beginning in December. Fans will have two opportunities to participate in the drive. The first collection will take at the Charlotte-East Carolina game this Saturday. The second collection is set for Saturday, December 8 when the women's basketball team takes on Stetson at 7 p.m. at Halton Arena. During the games, fans are invited to donate new, unwrapped toys that will later be distributed to children in need. Fans can drop donations in the marked "Toys for Tots" bin at the entrance to Halton Arena prior to each game. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to children.
