CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte men's and women's track team looks to continue its success when it opens the 2012-13 indoor season on Saturday, December 1 at the JDL College Kick Classic in Winston Salem, beginning at 9 a.m.
With Charlotte's seasoned veterans, the continuous development of its returners, and the addition of several newcomers, it has its expectations set high for the indoor season.
It's no secret that the 49ers expect to have another rewarding year after finishing at the top of the Atlantic 10 last season. The women captured the 2012 A-10 title and were picked to defend the title at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. The men finished second at the conference championship and as a result were predicted to finish in that place at the 2013 A-10 Championships.
Charlotte's depth along with its balance was a key to last season, where the women picked up 10 of its 14 conference titles. Joann Blakney was named the 2012 A-10 Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning titles in the 60m and 200m dash. T'Sheila Mungo was tabbed at the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer after capturing the 500m title. The Niners were also led by Jaleah Wilder (400m), Maraya Slatter (800m), and the 4X400 meter relay team of Wilder, Mungo, Cecily Young, and LeAnna Morrison. Also turning in consistent efforts for the 49ers throughout the season were La Trese Barker, Dominique Weathers, and Morrison.
In addition, Coach Olesen was named the 2012 A-10 Women's Coach of the Year.
The Niners will look to returners Briauna Jones, Jessica Morgan, Brittney Simmons, Lauren Gulley, Katrina Wright, Toby Jo Klauenberg, and Jana Eatman to contribute significantly in the field events during the indoor season along with newcomers Jamaica Dean, Aubrey Dowding, and Sarah Fell. Several returners and freshmen are also expected to make an impact in the sprints and hurdles.
In the distance events, Michael Tamayo moved into 10th all-time in school history in the 800m, finishing fifth overall in a time of 1:55.77.
Robert Wilson, in the midst of heptathlon competition, broke the school record in the pole vault, clearing 15'11". Livingston and Desmond Stearns finished third and sixth in the triple jump and Trey McRae tied for second in the high jump. McRae and Coye Still both jumped a height of 6'8.25", moving the duo into a tie for fourth all-time in Charlotte history.
The Niners expect to remain strong in the field events with its veterans and their recruiting class.
Experience and depth are two factors that the 49ers will rely on. Charlotte's biggest transition will take place in the sprints and hurdles. It returns Brian Hamilton, Jamil Muhammed-Ray but also adds influential rookies such as Anthony Bynum, Christopher Boyd, Casey Evans, and Chris Tate.
Charlotte's next meet will be in 2013 when it heads to future Conference USA member Alabama-Birmingham, for the UAB Blazer Invitational on January 10.
