Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to VCU in the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals at Transamerica Field. The 49ers loss was their first at home since October 31, 2010.
"It was a tough loss," Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. "It felt like an NCAA Tournament game. I thought that we were the team with better possession and dominating the play. We responded fantastic after VCU's goal. We had three or four chances but we did not get good contact on the ball. Our guys are hurting. It was bitterly disappointing."
VCU scored the game's only goal when Joseph Haboush passed to Mario Herrera Meraz who then drifted a shot into the upper right corner of the goal from about 25 yards in the 79th minute.
In the 83rd minute, the 49ers nearly tied the score but Aidan Kirbride's shot from close range was stopped by VCU's goalkeeper Clark Hankins. Then, in the 89th minute, Thomas Allen headed a shot point blank but his shot was stopped by VCU's Hankins.
The 49ers finished the game with an 11-5 advantage in shots. In the second half, the 49ers had an 8-1 advantage in shots. Jennings Rex led the 49ers with three shots. Will Mayhew and Giuseppe Gentile each tallied two shots. The 49ers also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The 49ers, who should earn an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament, will wait until Monday, November 12 at 5:30 pm for the NCAA Tournament Selection to see who they will face in the Tournament.
