Charlotte volleyball finished out the 2012 regular season on the road at former and briefly current conference foe VCU and ended the campaign with a 3-0 loss (25-21, 25-14, 25-19) to the Rams Thursday night at the Siegel Center in Atlantic 10 Conference action. The Rams improved to 24-5 overall, 10-4 in the league and in third place in the standings. Charlotte fell to 10-16 for the season, finishing with a 2-12 mark in conference.
The two teams were members of the Sun Belt (1979-91) and Metro (1991-95) Conferences together until Charlotte left for Conference USA, which will happen again after this season. VCU joined the A-10 this summer, in time for this season.
It was the final match of the careers of Charlotte's four seniors: Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.), Shannon McClean (Cypress, Tex. / Cy-Woods HS), Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) and Lily Vera (Anderson, S.C. / Stone Bridge HS). The match was the 115th for Rouse, putting her fifth all-time in Charlotte history.
Though the Rams led for the majority of the set, Charlotte was able to play it close. VCU took a 6-1 edge to start, but the Niners got the set tied at the eighth and ninth points. VCU then led by no more than two until 21-18 and kept the 49ers at bay to complete the set win. Freshman setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central) had 10 assists in the opening set. Rouse led the team with five digs in the opener.
The second set was closer early than the first, with the margin staying at one or two points until a mini-run of 4-1 by the Rams to get a 12-8 margin. VCU was able to get out to a six-point lead and then score on the last five serves of the set as Charlotte cut errors down from 10 to six in the second. VCU only had one error in the second for a .435 attack percentage. Junior co-captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) was the lone player with three kills in each of the first two sets to lead all players with six kills after two.
Charlotte came out to leads in the third, leading by as many as six in the frame, and hitting their best attack percentage (.163) for a set on the night. The Rams came alive near the midway point, turning a five-point deficit into a six-point win after 10 kills of their final 14 points of the frame.
Videmsek and freshman Carly Ochs (Town and Country, Mo. / St. Joseph's Academy) led the 49ers with eight kills each. Rouse led all players with 17 digs on the defensive end. McClean had four kills and two aces, while Vera had an assist in their final matches as a 49er.
Charlotte will next take the court as a member of Conference USA next fall.
