Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers begin the 2012-13 season in Halton Arena against Charleston Southern, Friday, November 9 at 6 pm. The 49ers are beginning their third season under Head Coach Alan Major.
The 49ers are 1-1 in season-openers under Major (W, 73-57 over North Carolina Central last season and L, 78-70 v. Gardner-Webb in 2010-11). Charlotte is 32-15 overall in season openers and 34-13 in their first home game of the season. This marks the 31st season that the 49ers have opened the season at home -- they are 21-9 in true home openers, with wins in six of their last seven home openers.
Charlotte returns three starters and eight letterwinners off last season's team led by preseason second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection senior Chris Braswell, junior guard DeMario Mayfield and preseason A-10 All-Defensive team selection sophomore Pierria Henry. Last season, Braswell led the 49ers in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg) en route to earning third-team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Mayfield finished third on the team in scoring (11.2 ppg) and second on the team in rebounding (7.0 rpg) last year. Henry, who earned A-10 All-Rookie team honors, ranked among the nation's leaders in steals with 72. He also averaged 7.2 points per game while dishing out a team-high 96 assists.
Rounding out the 49ers returners are seniors Ilija Ivankovic, Colby Lewis and Lamar Bradbury and sophomores E. Victor Nickerson and Terrence Williams. Nickerson saw action in 30 games with four starts last year. While, Williams saw action in 29 games with two starts last year. Ivankovic, Lewis and Bradbury gave the 49ers quality minutes off the bench last year. Mike Thorne, who redshirted last season, will give the 49ers size and length this season.
The last time the 49ers were in action, Charlotte defeated Pfeiffer, 95-51, in an exhibition game in Halton Arena, November 1. In that game, the 49ers had three players' record double-doubles. Clark led the 49ers with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Thorne scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench. Clayton scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Williams scored 16 points and Ingram scored 13 points including four-for-five from the three-point line.
The 49ers are 7-0 all-time against Charleston Southern. Six of the previous seven meetings have been played in Charlotte. The 49ers defeated Charleston Southern, 88-46, in their last meeting which was played in Halton Arena, December 6, 2000. Former 49ers standout Rodney White led three 49ers in double-figures with 23 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds in that game.
