Charlotte volleyball came out with a good game plan early, but eventually fell in three sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-16) to No. 14 Dayton Friday night at Halton Arena in Atlantic 10 Conference action. The Niners drop to 10-14 overall, 2-10 in the A-10. The Flyers improved to 21-4 on the season, a perfect 12-0 in conference play.
Charlotte jumped out early in the first set to an 8-2 lead, with five different 49ers logging a kill in a varied attack. Charlotte did not give up the lead until at 18-all, the Flyers scored the next three points of the set and kept Charlotte at bay for the opening set win. Junior co-captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) led all players with five kills in the opening set as the 49ers put together a .282 attack percentage. Freshman setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) paced the team with 14 assists in the opening frame.
Charlotte scored the first point in the second, but did not lead the rest of the set with team out of sorts in the frame. The Niners had 12 of the 23 match errors in the second frame, holding Dayton to a .269 attack percentage in the frame.
The Flyers played expertly in the third, putting together a 15-7 run in the middle going for the win. Charlotte scored on back-to-back points just three times in the set. Videmsek tied with a pair of Flyers with the set-high total of four kills.
Senior co-captain Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) had her 11th double-double of the season with match highs of 11 kills and 11 digs. Videmsek finished with nine kills for the 49ers, while senior libero Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) added 10 digs. She is seven away from becoming the 17th player in program history to log 1,000 career digs at Charlotte.
The 49ers will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday afternoon against Xavier before the final home match of the season. First service is scheduled for 1 p.m. with a pre-match ceremony for Charlotte's four outgoing seniors.
