STOCKTON, CALIF. -- Charlotte golf set a school record for a low round with a 21-under par 267 to climb to a seventh-place finish Wednesday at the Pacific Invitational at the Brookside Country Club in Stockton, California.
The 49ers were led by junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga.), who tied the school record for an 18-hole round at 64. His round matched Matt Mincer's eight-under at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships.
Castro started with bogeys on two of his first three holes before he birdied 10 of his final 15 to tie with three other golfers for the low round of the day. He finished tied for third overall at the 54-hole event at 14-under par (70-68-64 202) to tie the second-lowest 54-hole tournament score school ever by a Charlotte golfer. Only Stefan Wiedergruen's 17-under 199 was better in program history, set at the same event in 2007. The 18-hole team round previous record of 271 was also set in this event in 2007. Castro tied the tournament medalist Alex Edfort with 21 birdies for the weekend and also tied for the second-lowest score on the par-four holes, a nine-under par. Both his TUesday and Wednesday rounds set new career low personal bests.
Charlotte produced three golfers in the Top 10 for the tournament. Junior Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford HS),who was in a tie for first after an opening-round 65, finished in a tie for seventh overall with a final round 67. He ended with a 13-under 203 (65-71-67) for the week. Toland led all players for the weekend by playing the par-three holes at five-under par. He set a personal best with his opening-round 65, but set a new personal low for 54 holes this week.
Sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City, Canada / Beaulieu) ended tied for 10th, with a final round 66 for a new career low. He produced eight birdies for his six-under par score. He set a new personal best at -12 (71-67-66 204) for the week.
"I was very happy with Franco and what he did this week to shoot the numbers he shot," said 49ers head coach Ryan Cabbage. "Credit also goes to Raoul and Joe to help keep us in the hunt. Those three guys gave us an opportunity to win the tournament. For this week, to have three guys in the Top 10 is outstanding."
"We are finished with our fall schedule and have a chance to look back at the five events we played," added Cabbage. "We need to take an in-depth look at what we need to improve on as we move towards the spring schedule in February."
Charlotte's five spring tournaments will begin in Houston at the Redstone Golf Club in the Houston Invitational, beginning Saturday, February 23.
