STOCKTON, CALIF. -- Charlotte golf went low again in round two, turning in a seven-under par 281 on Tuesday, but seven of the 12 teams in the Pacific Invitational went 12-under or better, forcing the 49ers into eighth place into Wednesday's final round at Brookside Country Club. 25 players of the 60-man field posted a sub-70 score, with 16 more players shooting one or two-under in perfect conditions on the course, after the field was delayed two hours for fog in the early morning.
Sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City, Canada / Beaulieu) had a bogey on his third hole of the day, but went six-under on the back nine to post as the team's best Tuesday round, a five-under 67. It was his low round and second round under par of the season, achieved in Monday's round one.
"From a team standpoint, we got blitzed with some teams who posted some low numbers," said Niners head coach Ryan Cabbage. "Raoul and Franco played well and I think Joe did some good things, but we could not get it going. Today, if you are tallying scores over par on this golf course, you are going to have trouble making up ground on the rest of the field. We will come out with a good mindset and be ready to play in the morning and we look to make a move back up the leaderboard."
Junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga.) followed up his two-under 70 Monday with a four-under 68 on Tuesday. He got his round to six-under with six bogeys and nine pars before bogeys on 16 and 17 to end at 68. He was four under when he made the turn, finishing at even par over his last nine holes.
Menard and Castro are tied at six-under par so far and sit tied in a group of eight players together in 13th in the tournament field.
Junior Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford HS), one of the three leaders at the start of the day at seven-under, put up four more birdies in round two, but slid back to a one-under 71 for the day. He still leads the team at eight-under par and sits in a tie for sixth in the tournament with UC Davis' Matt Seramin through the two rounds. Toland has two rounds of even par and now three sub-par rounds so far this season to tie Castro for the team lead.
Charlotte freshman Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) was three-over Tuesday with four bogeys on the front nine and a late birdie for a 75. He was at even par yesterday and is three-over for the tournament.
Pacific's Alex Edfort is the tournament leader through two rounds at 13-under.
As it did on Monday, Charlotte will go off in the last grouping from the 10th hole, starting at 8:50 a.m. Pacific time to finish the tournament, which is the last competition for Charlotte this fall.
