STOCKTON, CALIF. -- Charlotte sits fourth after round one of the Pacific Invitational after turning in a season-low 10-under 278 at the Brookside Country Club Monday. The 49ers were led by junior Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford HS), who tied the team individual low round of the year with a seven-under 65, which included seven birdies and 11 pars for the round to put him in a three-way tie for the lead heading into round two tomorrow. Toland was tied for second in par-four scoring and tied for fourth in par-three scoring for the day. Only one player had more birdies than Toland for the day.
Charlotte is four strokes from co-leaders Kansas State and host Pacific. BYU sits third at 13-under par.
Four of Charlotte's five golfers posted their low round of the season en route to the team's best round of the fall in their 13th round of golf.
"I am proud of these guys," said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage. "Joe was really, really good. He had it going early and kept it going. Raoul bogeyed the first three holes he played, but make five birdies coming in and took a nice step forward. Franco was pretty good and posted a good score. Both Daniel and Thomas did some great things as well. Though we left a few shots out there, we did what we needed to do today. I am excited about the next two days and playing the way I know we can play."
Junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga.) had three bogeys, but five birdies to post a two-under 70 and in a tie for 19th heading to Tuesday's middle round. Only eight players went lower than Castro's three-under par score on the four par-five holes.
Sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City, Canada / Beaulieu) stumbled out of the gates with bogeys in his first three holes followed by three pars and another bogey, but surged for five birdies in his final nine holes to come in at one-under 71.Only Toland and four other players had more birdies than Menard Monday.
Freshman Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School & Sixth Form College) had 14 pars and finished with a 75. Only two players netted more par holes than Rowland.
The only player not to post his low round of the season was freshman Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.), who was just one-off his low round with an even-par 72. He posted four birdies and finished at even par in each half of his round of golf today.
