Sophomore Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) homered and tripled, driving in four runs to lead the Green team to a 7-4 victory and the series in the final game of the Green/White Series at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Sunday afternoon. Today's scrimmage marks the end of the fall team phase for the 49ers, who will continue workouts as smaller groups the rest of the semester.
Green won the series two games to one.
White scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Outfielder Desmond Roberts (Bellevue, Neb. / Garden City CC) and infielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) hit back-back doubles for the first run and a third double in the inning came with two outs from outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) to score Seager for the second run.
Green took its first lead in the bottom half with three runs. The inning got started with a leadoff walk to freshman infielder Matt Creech (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt County HS). After a flyout, redshirt freshman infielder Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) doubled to put runners at second and third. Senior infielder Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) pushed a single through the right side to score a run, but got caught in a rundown for the second out before Elwood tripled to score the tying run. Elwood was the go-ahead run on an RBI single from catcher Patrick Raley (Franklin, Tenn.)
Creech walked again in the second, stole his second base of the series and scored on a Lang single for a 5-2 score. A first-pitch homer to right center from the bat of Elwood in the fourth put the game away.
Despite giving up base runners, junior transfer starting pitcher Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) shut down the White attack, holding the squad scoreless over his final 3.2 innings.
Senior reliever Wes Hatley (Norwood, N.C. / South Stanly HS) inherited a pair of runners in the fifth, but got a groundout to end the threat. White was able to put two runs on him in the seventh, with Roberts adding a third hit and an RBI and junior Grant Dunnegan (Clearwater, Kan. / Hutchinson CC) recording a sacrifice fly for the fourth and final White run.
Hatley got the win, after 2.1 innings. He struck out and walked one batter.
Junior Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford) took the loss, allowing five runs in three innings. White reliever Weston Smith (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) struck out four in two innings, with senior Sean Pope (Huntersville, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) finished with a scoreless sixth.
Creech scored three runs for Green. Roberts collected three hits for White.
