Indianapolis, Ind.- Behind Jennings Rex's team-leading eighth goal of the season and another stellar defensive effort, the 14th-ranked  Charlotte 49ers (12-2-3, A-10: 6-1-1) blanked Butler (5-7-5, A-10: 3-4-1), 1-0, on the road. The 49ers recorded their ninth shutout of the season.

"This was a fantastic result," Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. "This game was a tale of two halves. We were not on the same page in the first half. However, we regrouped at halftime and dominated the run of play in the second half. We had several great scoring chances before Jennings Rex scored. I was also very happy with our defensive effort. This weekend, we went on the road and recorded two clean sheets which is fantastic."

The 49ers goal came after Giuseppe Gentile stole the ball from a Butler player near midfield. He passed the ball to Rex who then went on a run and blasted a shot directly in front of the goal from 20 yards out into the back of the net in the 78th minute. With the goal Rex moved into the team-lead with eight goals. He has now scored 21 goals in his career.

In the 49th minute, Rex nearly scored but his shot was stopped by Butler's goalkeeper Jon Dawson. In the 54th minute, Gentile's shot was stopped by Butler's Dawson. In the 59th minute. Gentile had another shot stopped by Dawson. Over the next 13 minutes, Charlotte's Isaac Caughran and Aidan Kirkbride took shots but their shots were either high, blocked or stopped by Butler's Dawson.

Charlotte finished the game with 11 shots with nine of those shots coming in the second half. Gentile led the 49ers with four shots. Kirkbride and Rex each recorded two shots apiece.

Charlotte's defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Aaron Weldon, David Mayer, Biko Bradnock-Brennan and Thomas Allen recorded their ninth shutout of the season. The 49ers defense has limited 14 foes to a goal or less this season.

Charlotte is currently tied with VCU for first place in the Atlantic 10. Each team has one game left in the regular-season. Charlotte concludes the regular-season when they play George Washington at Transamerica Field on Senior Night, Saturday, November 3 at 5 pm.
