CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
The Charlotte 49ers women's
soccer team surrendered a goal with two minutes left in the second overtime
Sunday afternoon to fall to Atlantic 10 newcomer Butler 1-0 on Senior Day at
Transamerica Field. Despite the setback, the Niners earned a spot in the
upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships.
Charlotte (10-7-2, 4-4-1 A-10) unofficially made the conference tournament by a
variety of tiebreakers after it finished in a three-way tie with Massachusetts
and Richmond for the No. 7 and 8 seeds. The 49ers are slated to be the No. 8
seed and will face regular-season champion La Salle in Thursday's opening
The Bulldogs, in their first season as a member of the conference, took
advantage of just one of three shots during the extra period to clinch the
victory. Sophia Maccagnone collected a loose ball and fired an attempt past
49ers goalkeeper Alex Kubrick
from the top of the 18-yard box at 108:00. Rachael Melendez and Randi DeLong were credited with the assists.
Charlotte had two apparent goals during regulation but both were called back
due to offside calls. The first came just before the opening period ended, in
minute, while the second was in the 73rd
Despite both scores being called off, the Niners kept fighting until the end, totaling
an 18-8 shot advantage against Butler (11-4-4, 5-1-3 A-10).
, in her final home match as a member of the Charlotte squad, led
all players with six shots, while fellow seniors Lacey McGowan
and Lena Suarez
also had chances to put the ball between the pipes.
Maccagnone and Mary Allen paced the Bulldogs with two shots apiece. Julie
Burton was forced to make just two saves in the cage in the shutout, one-half
of the amount stopped by Kubrick.
The 49ers will continue their season in the Atlantic 10 Championships opening
round as the No. 8 seed against La Salle. The Explorers captured a 2-1 victory
in the regular-season meeting, Oct. 14, in Philadelphia. The tournament will be
held in Kingston, R.I., on the Rhode Island campus.
