A two-run homer in the fifth by junior transfer Grant Dunnegan (Clearwater, Kan. / Hutchinson CC) off the scoreboard in right field broke open a four-all tie and propelled White to a 9-5 win in game one of the Green/White series as the end of fall practice closes this weekend for Charlotte baseball.
The White team got on the board first in the top of the first inning when outfielder Desmond Roberts (Bellevue, Neb. / Garden City CC) singled and scored on a double by junior infielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) for the game's initial run.
Green answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Senior infielder (Shane Basen / Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) hit a leadoff double out to left center and advanced to third on an infield groundout by infielder Derek Gallello (Fredericksburg, Va. / Riverbend HS). After a one-out walk to first baseman Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS), Basen scored on an RBI bunt single from outfielder Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) for the tie. After a strikeout, catcher Patrick Raley (Franklin, Tenn.) singled to being home Lang for the 2-1 lead.
An RBI double from redshirt senior outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) drove in the tying run in the fourth, while redshirt senior shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) hit the first of two doubles on the day, driving in two runs for the 4-2 lead.
White tied the game at four after freshman second baseman Matt Creech (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt County) hit a leadoff single in the fourth. He scored on a Basen triple, and Lang tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
Seager doubled to start the fifth before Dunnegan lifted a 1-1 pitch to right center to give Green the lead. Back-to-back singles from Elseser and freshman Nick Daddio (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) set up Roland's second double to drive in another run, followed by a wild pitch to score an eighth run for White.
White added their ninth and final run on a passed ball, allowing Dunnegan to cross the plate for a second time.
Green was able to get a fifth run across when sophomore Leland Clemmons (Chesapeake, Va. / Portsmouth Christian HS) stole home after reach with a single for his only base hit of the game.
Freshman Adam Huffman (Burlington, N.C. / Western Alamance HS) got the win after five innings pitched. He struck out a batter and gave up six hits.
The loss went to Green's Jordan Hudson (Lexington, N.C. / West Davidson HS) after giving up the homer and four runs in two-thirds of an inning. He struck out a batter.
