Senior Shannon McClean (Cypress, Tex. / Cy-Woods HS) set a career high with four service aces as Charlotte volleyball won its second match in the last three with a 3-1 victory (25-13, 19-25, 25-20, 27-25) at La Salle Friday night in Atlantic 10 Conference action. The 49ers are 10-12 on the season, 2-8 in the A-10. The Explorers slip to 4-22, 0-19 in league play. It was the 14th and final meeting between the two programs in A-10 play, with Charlotte finishing unblemished in the series.
Charlotte got up early 5-1 and got the momentum going in the first set to cruise into the lead. Sophomore Savannah Gaster (Johnsonville, S.C.) led all player with four kills and tied the team lead with two blocks in the opening set.
The Explorers came out in the second to a 4-0 run with the score ties at three and kept the lead to level the match. The 49ers had 10 of their 24 match errors and hit just a .026 attack percentage in that set.
Following the intermission, the 49ers jumped out to another 5-1 start, but the Explorers managed a tie at 18-all. The 49ers gave up just one more point the rest of the way as junior co-captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) logged two straight kills to get the lead, the Niners got a second ace from McClean plus another kill before La Salle managed one final point in the third-set win.
The fourth set was tight, with 11 of the 14 total ties and five of the six lead changes in the match until the Explorers took a 14-all tie and turned it into a 23-17 lead and all indications were for a fifth-set tiebreak. Charlotte mounted a 7-0 run, which included two of McClean's aces, to earn a first match point at 24-23. La Salle was able to tie it twice, but an error and a match-ending kill from senior co-captain Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) gave the Niners the victory.
Freshman setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) put career highs with 44 assists, 10 digs and five kills for her first career double-double. Rouse had her tenth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 16 digs, while Videmsek led all players with 18 kills. Senior libero Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) finished with the match high of 25 digs, with freshman Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) adding 10.
The 49ers will stay in Philadelphia and visit Temple on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
