The Niner women have surely made their mark in the conference over the years. Last season, the 49ers were third in the conference and were led by former standout Amanda Goetschius who was third overall. Charlotte has finished in the top five over the past seven years in the conference. Charlotte's closest grasp at the A-10 title was in 2008 and 2009 when it was second in the championship race. Goetschius' finish (17:37.7) in the 2008 championship ranks third in the A-10 Top Five Championship Performances.
With Charlotte's proven track record, it knows that it's capable of being a top tier team. The Niners have been a competitive force this year with veteran leadership from Hana Sutchar and Maria Ruiz, along with steady performances from Morgan Richards, Jenna Christensen, and Jen Molke. Sutchar finished 14th (17:55.5) in the championship last year, earning all-conference honors.
The Niner men have also got their taste of success in the A-10 over the years. Charlotte started as a powerhouse when it joined the A-10 back in 2005, finishing third. Over the next six years, the 49ers placed in the top 10, earning all-conference awards in five of those years. Adu Dentamo highlighted Charlotte's 2008 performance in the championship after finishing first (24:01.9) to become the individual champion. Dentamo's time ranks third overall in the A-10 Top Five Championship Performances.
This season a few different Niners have stepped up to lead the pack. Zach Greth has led Charlotte four out of five races this season. Rookie Getisso Dentamo has continued to be in the forefront for the 49ers along with efforts from Michael Tamayo, Eleazar Garcia, and Chris Anderson.
"It's going to be tough on both sides," Ed Schlichter said about the A-10 Championship. "I think every team goes in with the mindset of wanting to bring the trophy home and I know we'd sure like to bring some accolades back to Charlotte. It simply has to be our day on Saturday. If it's our day, we're capable of doing something big."
