Charlotte, N.C. - Niner Nation saw the first glimpse of the 2012-13 editions of the 49ers men's and women's basketball programs at a festive Basketball Madness, Thursday, October 18.

With over 2600 fans in attendance, Niner Nation was entertained with a program that included player introductions, pep talks from head coaches Cara Consuegra and Alan Major, a skills challenge and a dunk contest. Back for the second year as host was 49ers alum and current meteorologist for WACH FOX 57 in Columbia, South Carolina, Garrett Bedenbaugh. Last season, Bedenbaugh, Norm The Niner and several members of the Gold Dusters dance team began Madness by dancing the Wobble. This season, Bedenbaugh, Norm and the Gold Dusters kicked off Madness by dancing to Gangnam Style.

One of the highlights of the evening was members of the 49ers football team lining up on the basketball court and running a play. After that 49ers football coach Brad Lambert talked to Niner Nation.

Then, several members of the 49ers men's and women's basketball team took part in an entertaining choreographed dance routine. Next, the men's and women's players and some members of the student body participated in a skills challenge involving dribbling between cones, shooting and riding a tricycle.

The evening culminated with the slam dunk contest between men's basketball players Darion Clark, Willie Clayton and Terrence Williams. Williams, who reached the finals of last season's slam dunk contest, defeated Clayton in the finals after slamming home a pass from Pierria Henry, who was standing on the concourse of Halton Arena.

The slam dunk contest also featured a "surprise dunker" senior guard Colby Lewis, who dunked on a toy basket at center court.

Fans are reminded that the 49ers will hold Fan Day in Halton Arena on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. The doors open at 1:30 pm. The 49ers women's basketball team will scrimmage at 2 pm and the men's basketball team will scrimmage at 2:30 pm. Both teams will be signing autographs, and inflatable activities will be available for kids, along with the opportunity for Junior 49ers Club members to interview 49ers players.
