AMHERST, Mass. -
Charlotte netted its fastest
goal of the season, going ahead in the second minute, but surrendered a late
regulation equalizer and neither team could find the back of the net again, as the
49ers women's soccer team tied Massachusetts Friday afternoon, 1-1, in Amherst,
Redshirt sophomore Jennifer Lee
posted her second goal of the campaign at 1:38
as Charlotte (10-4-2, 4-1-1 A-10) took advantage of a corner kick situation for
the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Amanda Jones
had taken a corner kick just seven seconds
earlier; however, as the Minutewomen attempted to clear the ball away from
their own cage, Lee intercepted the ball and placed it between the pipes.
The Niners maintained the early push, firing five shots in the game's opening
10 minutes, but were unsuccessful in expanding their edge. The match stayed
that way through the first half, as Charlotte held an 8-3 advantage on attempts
and 5-2 edge on corner kicks.
The wet and rainy conditions that forced the start of the contest to be moved
up an hour continued through the second stanza. Massachusetts (7-8-1, 2-3-1
A-10) came out more aggressive on the offensive end, ripping four shots in the
first 15 minutes, including three by Grace Coombs.
Then, over the next 18 minutes, it was the 49ers' turn, as senior Carrie Dail
(twice), junior Dakota Olson
(twice), Lee and senior Sarah Ann Waugh
up shots at the Minutewomen goal. However, none of the attempts were able to
sneak past the end line and it remained a one-goal cushion.
As the regulation clock wound down, Coombs stood over the ball for a free kick
set piece on the left side of the net. She placed her shot behind Niner
goalkeeper Alex Kubrick
for the equalizer at 87:22 for the equalizer.
In the extra time, freshman Alex Meyers
had the only shot during the first 10
minutes, while eight Charlotte attempts to zero for UMass were registered on the
board; however, none of them again would be the clincher and the game ended in
Dail led all players with seven shots, while Coombs topped the hosts with a
half dozen. The 25 shots for the 49ers as a team set a new season high.
Charlotte will return to action as it closes the five-game road trip at 1 p.m.
Sunday in Kingston, R.I., against Rhode Island. The contest will also be at the
site of the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships, starting November 1 and running
through November 3.
