In his first round of the season, senior Braeden Cryderman (Huntsville, Ont., Canada / St. Dominic's) is tied for the tournament lead at five-under par (69-70) after day one of the Rod Myers Invitational, hosted by Duke University Saturday. His three-under par 69 is a career-low round in his third season at Charlotte after transferring from Queens University of Charlotte following his freshman campaign. It is the second-lowest round posted by a 49er this season to date.
Thanks to Cryderman's tournament-best 12 total birdies for the two rounds, Charlotte is in second place, behind No. 15 Duke by two strokes, at even par (285-291 576), with one round remaining for the tournament. The 49ers are ahead of four other teams ranked in the Top 50, holding a five-stroke lead over No. 48 UNC Chapel Hill.
Blue Devil Julian Suri and Tar Heel Clark Palmer, both listed as the number-three player in the line-up for their team, joins Cryderman, also listed in the number-three spot for Charlotte, at five-under par. Those three will be the last group out of the day, at 9:40 a.m. from the first tee at the Par-72, 7,154-yard Duke University Golf Club. Charlotte, Duke and UNC Chapel Hill will all go out together, starting at 9 a.m.
"Obviously, it was a really good day for us," said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage. "I cannot speak highly enough of what Braeden Cryderman was able to do out there today, with the numbers he posted. Everyone contributed to the low score out there. I am hoping we can execute the gameplan we were able to today and go control the things we can control for one more great round."
Junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga.) had rounds of one-under 71 and one-over 73 to sit at even par, tied for 10th in the field after day one. Freshman Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) had a pair of one-over rounds of 73 to sit in a tie for 20th, at two over. Castro is tied for fourth in the tournament field with nine birdies in the first two rounds, while he and Brantley are in a small group of players tied for third in the field that have played the par-five holes at a combined four-under par. Junior Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford HS) is tied for 26th in the tournament, after an even-par 72 and a three-over 75. Only two players have one more than his third-best 27 total pars for the weekend to this point.
Cryderman and teammate Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School & Sixth Form College), playing as an individual this weekend, are two of six players tied for fifth for the weekend by playing the par-three holes at a combined one-under par.
Charlotte entered the week with a record of 22-16, but finished third and fourth at the last two tournaments entered. The 49ers were ranked No. 75 in the latest Golfweek rankings.
