BRONX, N.Y. -
The Charlotte 49ers women's soccer
team found itself in a hole early but quickly recovered and put Fordham away,
3-1, to extend its current win streak to six and remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10
action this fall. The 49ers also reached the double-digit victory plateau for
the third time in head coach John Cullen
's four seasons.
"Very pleased with the comeback win on the road tonight," Cullen said. "Our
young team showed tremendous character tonight. We got back into it and that
just showed the character of our team, to be down one and come back and get the
The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Kaitlyn Carballeira headed home a
deflection at the 11:26 mark from just outside the six-yard box. Fordham (6-9,
2-3 A-10) set up the opportunity with a free kick barely on its side of the
midfield stripe. The set piece found its way into the box, where Carballeira
redirected the ball past starting Charlotte netminder Alex Kubrick
, who was
making her first start in nearly a month due to injuries.
The 49ers, however, did not waste much time in tallying the equalizer. A tie-up
near the top of the 18-yard box resulted in Alex Meyers
one-timing a pass to
. Jones corralled the ball that squirted free and placed it between
the pipes for a 1-1 score at 35:55 and her team-leading seventh mark of the
The Charlotte (10-3-1, 5-0 A-10) connected again for the next goal; however,
the roles were reversed. Following a Ram push towards the Niners' cage, Jones
broke free from the pack and sprinted up the left side. She headed the ball to
herself to maintain a stride past the Fordham defense. By the time she nearly
reached the opposite penalty box area, she sent a left-sided cross to the top
of the 18, where Meyers was following through in support. Meyers leapt and
redirected her header behind the hosts' Rachel Suther to increase the margin to
2-1 at 40:35.
It would remain a one-goal contest through the half, but early in the second
period, the 49ers found themselves with an opportunity to increase the cushion
again. Jennifer Lee
chipped a pass onto the feet of Monica Trickett
, who fired
home her shot at 51:58 to increase the padding to 3-1, which would prove to be
the final score.
Both teams had several chances throughout the cold night on the artificial
surface playing field; however, it was the Rams who owned the lead in shots,
Charlotte's win sets up a showdown at 1 p.m. Sunday with the only other
remaining unbeaten team in the Atlantic 10. The 49ers travel to Philadelphia
for a clash with La Salle, who improved to 5-0 in the conference with a 1-0
triumph against George Washington earlier Friday.
