CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Sophomore Taylor Carcella led the Charlotte women's cross country team to an eighth place finish at the Royal Cross Country Challenge, hosted by Queens University at McAlpine Creek Park earlier Friday afternoon.

Duke won the event with a team score of 56. Davidson followed in second (69), while Florida State (77), Liberty (89), Western Carolina (137), Wofford (158), Elon (230), Mount Olive (298), and South Carolina (303) rounded out the top ten.

The 49ers finished with a team score of 238 in the 5K. Carcella was 15th (18:13.5) out of a field of 217 runners. Freshman Lauren Pollard was second for the Niners, finishing 32nd overall with a time of 18:36.8. Sophomore Chelsea Matson finished 58th (18:36.8), followed by freshman Caragh MacDermott in 63rd (19:27.3).

Also running for Charlotte was juniors Nicole Morgan (19:38.7) and Sarah Bentley (19:47.9), along with freshman Ashleigh Handchen (20:44.5).

The men's team competed unattached as senior Cody Hodgins was 28th overall (25:44.1) in the 8K out of 189 runners. Freshman Nathan Tallada crossed the line with a time of 28:07.5.

The rest of the Niner squad will compete at the 24th Annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Saturday, Oct .13, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
