CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
First day action featuring a
pair of doubles rounds and one singles round wrapped up Friday evening at the
Charlotte 49er Invitational, hosted by the women's tennis team at the
Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. Charlotte donned pink t-shirts during the
afternoon in support of breast cancer awareness and research.
The 49ers opened the day by facing UNC Greensboro in doubles. The Spartans
claimed victories in all three matches with Charlotte securing its most games
won in the No. 1 contest, where UNCG's Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead
posted an 8-6 decision over Anna Ekelund
and Lisa Grosselius
The Niners bounced back with greater success in their next round, when they
squared off against East Carolina. Two of the three contests fell into the
hands of the Green and White, finishing the day strong in doubles.
Charlotte's top pairing recovered from its earlier setback to pick up an 8-2
win against the Pirates' Danielle Terpko and Yilian Zhang at the No. 1 slot. In
the No. 2 tilt, Natsuko Takayanagi
and Alexandra Zinn
garnered an 8-1 victory
against ECU's Nicole LaDuca and Melis Tanik.
Concluding the day was a round of singles in which the 49ers played against
Coastal Carolina. Again, the Niners pulled through and claimed three triumphs
in the five contested matches.
Ekelund handed Kourtney Kowal a 6-3, 6-0 loss at the No. 2 slot, while
Takayanagi also captured her match in straight sets, defeating Mikaela Davies
6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 position.
needed three sets to close out her No. 5 meeting with Vanessa
Ortiz but she rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 triumph.
Tournament play continues Saturday with one last round of doubles and two
additional rounds of singles.
