Charlotte, NC- The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (7-2-2) (16th in College Soccer News, 19th in Soccer America and 22nd in NSCAA polls) play Fordham (4-4-1, A-10: 0-1), and La Salle (7-2-2, A-10: 1-0) in their Atlantic 10 home opening weekend at Transamerica Field this weekend, October 12-14. First, the 49ers play Fordham in their Atlantic 10 home opener, Friday, October 12 at 7 pm. The, the 49ers play La Salle at Transamerica Field, Sunday, October 14 at 1 pm.
Charlotte is 5-0-2 all-time in their Atlantic 10 home opener. Since 2000, the 49ers are 8-2-2 in their conference home opener.
Giuseppe Gentile leads the 49ers in goals with four after scoring a goal in the 49ers 2-0 win at Richmond last Sunday. Donnie Smith, who scored the game-winning goal in the 49ers win at Richmond, and Jennings Rex are tied for second on the team in goals with three apiece. Aidan Kirkbride has scored two goals this season. Isaac Caughran leads the team with three assists. Smith, Kirkbride, Will Mayhew, Tyler Gibson and Nick Barnhorst are tied for second on the team with two assists apiece.
The 49ers defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Allen, Anthony Perez, Nick Barnhorst, David Mayer, Aaron Weldon and Biko Bradnock-Brennan has been stellar this season. The 49ers have recorded four shutouts and limited eight foes to a goal or less this season.
Friday's game will mark the seventh meeting between Charlotte and Fordham, who leads the all-time series, 3-2-1. Charlotte lost to Fordham on the road, 1-0, in their last meeting, October 23, 2011. Charlotte and Fordham tied, 2-2, in double overtime in their last game at Transamerica Field, October 25, 2009. Former 49ers standouts Adam Gross and Charles Rodriguez scored the in that game.
Sunday's game will mark the fifth meeting between Charlotte and La Salle. Charlotte leads the all-time series, 2-1-1. Charlotte tied La Salle, 2-2, in double overtime on the road in their last meeting, October 21, 2011. Caughran and former 49ers stalwart T.J. Beaulieu scored the 49ers goals in that game. The 49ers defeated La Salle, 3-0, in their last meeting at Transamerica Field, October 23, 2009. Caughran scored the 49ers first goal in that game which proved to be the game-winner.
Admission to the Fordham game is $5 for adults and $2 for youth (17-and-under). Admission to the La Salle game is $5 for adults and youth (17-and-under) are admitted free. Admission to both games is free for Charlotte 49ers students with a valid student ID.
