After going out into the community to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research, Charlotte volleyball's Dig Pink campaign will stay closer to home to finish out the rest of the week leading up to Thursday night's 11th-annual Dig Pink Match, which starts at 7 p.m. versus Butler.
The team already raised over $1,600 in solicitations at Carolina Panthers tailgates, and nearly another $1,000 in donations at the University Chick-Fil-A this week, outside of the restaurant's donations during Dig Pink periods of the day, when patrons noted the cause when ordering, for a portion of those proceeds to return to the Dig Pink cause. These were in addition to the on-line donations already given at the team's Dig Pink page.
Charlotte, the nation's top volleyball fundraiser last season, will hold its third-annual "Jail and Bail" on Wednesday at the entrance to the Student Union, where campus celebrities will be held and asked to solicit donations for their release, raising monies for the cause. This year's list of notables is as impressive a list as has been seen in the past with the group.
This event will take up the noon hour on campus.
The Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast Mobile Mammography Coach will be on campus that day, from 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. at the SAC Loading Dock area. Appointments fill up fast and are usually all booked before the day of the event. Please call 704-403-1729 to schedule a mammogram for that day.
Also, there will be a raffle for an autographed Carolina Panthers hat during the game. The first 1,000 fans in the doors will receive a Dig Pink t-shirt to wear during the match. Football coaches will be on hand to toss out special pink t-shirts during breaks in the match and the Penny Wars will conclude during the match.
There are plans to hang pink balloons around the arena the night of the match. If you would like to submit information to be put on a balloon to honor a breast cancer survivor or memorialize someone who lost their battle with breast cancer, click this link.Charlotte has set single-match attendance records in the last two Dig Pink matches, with 1,803 fans coming to the 2010 match against Temple and a crowd of 1,810 attending last year's tilt with Rhode Island.
The men's soccer team is coordinating a corresponding night on October 19. The team will wear pink jerseys in that match, with those to be auctioned off during the evening, as well as donations being solicited that night in a match against Massachusetts.
The 49ers were the national champion in Dig Pink fundraising totals, bringing in $11,878 through all of their efforts in 2011. This comes after finishing second in the nation for colleges and universities by raising just over $10,000 a year ago.
Charlotte was where "Dig for the Cure" was founded, by then-head coach Lisa Marston, for the 2002 season. Current head coach Chris Redding maintained the "Dig for the Cure" philanthropy upon his arrival in 2007and the program joined forces with "Dig Pink" for the 2009 season, with the Side-Out Foundation for raising awareness and money for Breast Cancer Research. Marston currently serves on the Side-Out Foundation's Board of Directors.
The Side-Out Foundation is a 501 c3 Non-Profit charity operating under the brand of Dig PinkTM that promotes volleyball events throughout the year to raise money for Breast Cancer translational research and community support services. Since 2004, Dig Pink raised nearly $5M for breast cancer research and education, with help from teams and tournaments from around the country.
