Charlotte opened up the Halton Arena floor to an Atlantic 10 Conference opponent for the first time this season, but visiting VCU won 3-0 (25-23-25-21-25-17) to return as a conference foe for the 49ers Saturday night in college volleyball action. The Rams improve to 16-3 overall, 3-2 in league play. The loss drops Charlotte under the .500 mark for the first time this season, at 8-9, with an 0-5 conference record.
The two teams were conference opponents in the Metro Conference days, from 1991-1995, after both leaving the Sun Belt as conference opponents since VCU joined in 1979. Charlotte and VCU have not played one another in volleyball since 2002.
The largest lead of the match through the first two close sets was four, which VCU achieved three times. Charlotte held a lead as large as three, getting that in the start of the second set.
The third set was tight to a three-point edge for VCU at 16-13, but it was the only set in which Charlotte did not take a lead. After a 49ers timeout, the Rams scored four points in a row to open up the final set and kept the margin around seven going away.
The Rams were able to put up 12 blocks on Charlotte, the second-largest total for an opponent this season. Charlotte recorded more kills, assists and digs than the Rams in the match.
Charlotte junior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) led all players with 14 kills. Senior Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) had the second-most kills in the match with 11. Those 11 kills put her into a tie for ninth in program history with Jessica Oldenburg (2003-06) with 1,172 (complete list). Charlotte freshman Carly Ochs (Town and Country, Mo. / St. Joseph's Academy) tied VCU's Kristin Boyd with 10 kills, which led the Rams. Charlotte libero Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) led all players with 20 digs in the match.
Videmsek leads the 49ers with 208 kills and a 3.47 per-set average. She also led the team with a pair of blocks. Her 38 blocks leads the team as well.
Charlotte will next play the second new member of the A-10, Butler, in a Thursday-night match at 7 p.m. That match is the 11th-annual Dig Pink Match, with the 49ers raising money for breast cancer research. The first 1,000 fans in the door will receive a pink Dig Pink t-shirt.
