Charlotte volleyball's annual Dig Pink campaign is in full swing and approaching the 11th-straight year with a match to raise funds benefitting breast cancer research and steps to a cure as October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The match will be Thursday, October 11, against new conference for Butler, starting at 7 p.m. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

The team will wear special pink jerseys in the match, and for the first time in the match history at Charlotte, they will auction those jerseys off via an online auction, with the link to be announced soon. Football coaches will be on hand to toss out pink t-shirts at the match.

Charlotte has set single-match attendance records in the last two Dig Pink matches, with 1,803 fans coming to the 2010 match against Temple and a crowd of 1,810 attending last year's tilt with Rhode Island.

The men's soccer team is coordinating a corresponding night on October 19. The team will wear pink jerseys in that match, with those to be auctioned off during the evening, as well as donations being solicited that night in a match against Massachusetts.

The 49ers were the national champion in Dig Pink fundraising totals, bringing in $11,878 through all of their efforts. This comes after finishing second in the nation for colleges and universities by raising just over $10,000 a year ago.

The University Chik-Fil-A will be participating with the charity again this year. Fans and supporters are encouraged to dine at the restaurant for lunch between 11a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday and/or Tuesday, October 8-9. Patrons must mention Dig Pink when they order for portions of proceeeds to go back to the fundraiser. Zeta Tau Alpha will be in attendance at the location to assist patrons during the Tuesday lunch period. Patrons can also play games for prizes as part of the Dig Pink festivities.

The Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast Mobile Mammography Coach will be on campus that day, from 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. at the SAC Loading Dock area. Appointments fill up fast and are usually all booked before the day of the event. Please call 704-403-1729 to schedule a mammogram for that day.

Penny Wars began on campus Monday, October 1, with Charlotte athletic teams competing against one another to raise money for the cause. The finale of the fundraising for this event culminates Thursday when the intermission of the match will provide the last push for the teams to compete for a team plaque.

Next Wednesday the 10th, the Third-Annual Jail & Bail takes place at the entrance to the Student Union, as campus celebrities will be placed in a mock public jail cell and will solicit "bail money" to be released as part of the goal totals. This year's participants...

  • Michelle Guobadia - Director of Fraternity & Sorority Like
  • Loren Hibbs - Head Baseball Coach
  • Kyle Gookins - Assistant Soccer Coach
  • Napoleon Sykes - Outside Linebacker Coach
  • Michele Howard - Dean of Students
  • Aimee DeVos - Head Softball Coach

At Thursday's match, fans entering the arena will get a free Dig Pink t-shirt, while supplies last.

The team has previously made a fundraising appearance at a Carolina Panthers home game tailgate, already raising over $1,600 towards this year's tally.

Charlotte was where "Dig for the Cure" was founded, by then-head coach Lisa Marston, for the 2002 season. Current head coach Chris Redding maintained the "Dig for the Cure" philanthropy upon his arrival in 2007and the program joined forces with "Dig Pink" for the 2009 season, with the Side Out Foundation for raising awareness and money for Breast Cancer Research. Marston currently serves on the Side Out Foundation's Board of Directors.

The Side-Out Foundation is a 501 c3 Non-Profit charity operating under the brand of Dig PinkTM that promotes volleyball events throughout the year to raise money for Breast Cancer translational research and community support services. Since 2004, Dig Pink raised nearly $5M for breast cancer research and education, with help from teams and tournaments from around the country.

There are plans to hang pink balloons around the arena the night of the match. If you would like to sumbit information to be put on a balloon to honor a breast cancer survivor or memorialize someone who lost their battle with breast cancer, click this link.
