NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Charlotte redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Annika McHenry has received the first conference honor of her career, being
selected as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for October 1. The Cary, N.C., native
is the first 49ers women's soccer player to be chosen for an award this fall.
McHenry put together a solid week in goal, earning three-straight victories and posting her first collegiate shutout as Charlotte extended its current win streak to four. The 49ers have improved their record to 8-3-1 overall and 2-0 in league action, one of just four A-10 programs to open unbeaten through the weekend.
She started her stellar week by coming on in relief of starter Alex Kubrick in the sixth minute of Tuesday's 6-0 triumph over Francis Marion. She stopped four Patriots shots in the final 84:22 for her first collegiate win.
Then, over the weekend facing Atlantic 10 action for the first time in her career, McHenry secured two more Charlotte triumphs. She held off a fierce VCU attack, facing 16 shots, in the 2-1 overtime victory. She finished with five saves in 99:57 between the pipes against the Rams.
Finally, she collected four more saves Sunday in a 2-0 win against Richmond for her first collegiate shutout. She was the last line of defense against the Spiders, including holding 2011 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year Becca Wann to just two shots.
McHenry concluded the week with 13 saves and just one score allowed in 274:19 in net for a 0.33 goals-against average. She had a 92.9 save percentage for the 49ers.
Her Rookie of the Week plaudit is the 14th for the Charlotte program since it joined the Atlantic 10. She becomes just the eighth in the group to win it outright for a week.
She will join the rest of her Charlotte teammates at 3 p.m. Saturday as they begin a five-game road swing through the conference in Washington, D.C., against George Washington.
