Despite being outscored by 12 total points, the Charlotte 49ers were swept in three sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) at Rhode Island Sunday. Charlotte saw its season record leveled to 8-8 and slipped to 0-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Rams are now 6-10 overall, 2-2 in A-10 action.
The Rams jumped out to a 4-1 edge in the opening set and never lost the lead, despite a couple of late Charlotte runs to close the gap.
The 49ers led by as many as five in the second set, but three runs of 4-0 by URI gave the Rams a late 24-19 lead in the set. Charlotte's comeback got the score to 24-23 after four points in a row, but a Rams kill ended the run and put Rhode Island up two sets to none.
The third set was the tightest, with the two team trading leads until the Rams went on a 6-0 run as Charlotte led 12-10. The 49ers fought back to within one at 18-17, but URI closed the match by scoring the final seven points to take the victory.
The kills lead was tied by junior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) and freshman Mireya Braxton (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence HS), who had eight each. THis was the seventh time this season that Videmsek has led or tied for the team lead in kills, but the second time the team has suffered a loss when it has happened. She also took over the team lead with 194 kills this season. Senior Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) led all players in the match with 18 digs.
Charlotte, which has not played a home conference game to this point, will start a five-match home stand starting next Saturday night, when the 49ers host VCU at 7 p.m. It will be Free Youth Night, with all youth ages 17 and under getting in free.
