After nearly a two-week layoff, the Charlotte golf team returns to action in the Palmetto State, taking to the Haig Point Club to compete in the Rees Jones Collegiate Invite, hosted by the University of South Carolina. The 49ers will send the same five that competed to a third-place finish two weekends ago at the Tar Heel Invite.
A bevy of South Carolina-based schools, along with Charlotte and UNC Wilmington, Liberty, Iowa State, East Carolina, Tennessee Tech and defending champion Kennesaw State will descend to Daufuskie Island, South Carolina for two rounds Monday and a final round Tuesday. Host South Carolina is joined by Charleston Southern, Francis Marion, Presbyterian and Winthrop as schools competing form the home state.
The 49ers are paired with Kennesaw State and South Carolina on the first four holes of the 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Fans planning to attend need to make time for a ferry ride out to the island and the course. A $25 admission ticket will include ferry transportation both days and admission to hospitality (including food and beverage) on Monday, while a $10 ticket for Tuesday gains a ferry ride and admission for the final round.
The course set up will play par-72 and 7,380 yards for the duration. The course opened in 1986 and was named the 28th best course in the country by Golf Digest and 68th-best in the world by Golf Magazine. Rees Jones, the original architect, remodeled the course in 2007. Kennesaw State has won the past two titles.
Freshman Dan Hendry, who earned A-10 Golfer of the Week for his tie for fourth at the Tar Heel invitational, will lead the charge into the Ress Jones tournament. His 73.2 strike average through two tournaments leads the team. He is joined by senior Joe Toland, junior Franco Castro, sophomore Raoul Menard and freshman Daniel Brantley.
Day one results will be posted on Monday.
