CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Sophomore Zach Greth led the Charlotte men's cross country team to an eighth place finish at the fourth annual Charlotte Invitational earlier Friday afternoon.
The Niners finished with a team score of 318 in the 8K Gold race. Virginia Tech (31) won the event followed by Wake Forest (80), Davidson (138), Appalachian State (149), High Point (154), Clemson (196), Richmond (197), Marshall (332), and Samford (334) to round out the top 10.
Greth recorded a time of 25:18.98 to finish 29th overall. This is Greth's second time this season leading the 49ers.
"The key today was definitely the start of the race," Greth explained. "I struggled with that last week in Toldeo but I learned my lesson and I wanted to make sure that I executed it well this time. I shaved a minute off my personal record from this meet last year so it's just encouraging to see all of the work pay off. It's given me a lot of confidence heading into the rest of the season."
Freshman Getisso Dentamo was second for Charlotte and finished 62nd overall (25:59.34). Freshman Michael Tamayo was third for the 49ers and turned in a 66th place finish (26:04:90). Freshmen Chris Anderson (26:11.57/69th) and John Felts (26:36.27/92nd) also rounded out the top five for Charlotte.
The men averaged a time of 26:02.21.
Charlotte women's cross country team was 12th in the 6K event. Charlotte finished with a team score of 338.
Clemson (83) won the event followed by Appalachian State (106), Richmond (137), Samford (146), Elon (177), East Carolina (179), North Florida (188), Wake Forest (206), Virginia Tech (230), and Davidson (287) to round out the top 10.
Senior Maria Ruiz dazzled in her second appearance of the season, leading the 49ers with a 30th overall finish with a time of 22:36.38.
"This was an awesome race," said Ruiz. "Our goal was to go out hard as a pack. This was probably the best race where we all got out and continued to move forward throughout the competition."
Senior Hana Sutchar finished second for the Niners and 70th overall (23:16.26). Freshman Morgan Richards was third for Charlotte and 73rd overall, finishing with a time of 23:17.23. Sophomores Jenna Christensen (23:18.46/75th) and Jen Molke (23:34.46/90th) rounded out the top five for the 49ers.
