CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Sophomore Amanda Jones netted both goals,
including the game winner with just ticks left in the first overtime period, to
give the Charlotte women's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over VCU
in the Atlantic 10 opener for both programs. The contest was delayed for over
an hour at the start due to a weather delay, including some lightning in the
"Wow, what a conference game," head coach John Cullen said. "If they are all going to be like that this year, then we're going to be in for some great soccer matches. VCU is going to be a great new addition to the Atlantic 10.
"I was really proud of our girls to come from behind against a good side and not only find a way to get back in it, but also go on and win it. It's an outstanding start to the conference season."
With time winding down in the first frame of an extra 10 minutes, senior Carrie Dail fed a beautiful through ball to Jones' feet. The All-Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team member last season then poked it to the far right post past Ram goalkeeper Kristin Carden to provide Charlotte (7-3-1, 1-0 A-10) its third-straight victory at the 99:57 mark.
"It feels great," Jones said. "It was a really good win for us tonight in our first conference game and hopefully we can keep that going."
Jones had earlier tallied the equalizer after the 49ers found themselves trailing by one at the half. With renewed energy and focus, and a shift in strategy, Charlotte entered the second 45 minutes looking to knot the score.
VCU (5-4-2, 0-1 A-10) was whistled for a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Three 49ers stood near the ball, forcing a quick decision by the Rams as to who would be taking the kick. After freshman Maddie Kiebel and redshirt sophomore Jennifer Lee each touched it, Jones ripped home the 20-footer to the left side of the cage to tie the game at 1-1 at the 54:06 mark.
The weather delay did not seem to bother VCU during the opening stretch, as it controlled much of the early action and was able to jump out in front 1-0 at 16:25 on a Courtney Conrad score. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Annika McHenry came out to challenge Conrad, initially stopping the Ram's first attempt. However, the ball remained loose and Conrad was able to punch home her second shot standing near the penalty spot.
Both teams had several other chances to hit the twine but their shots either hit the posts, crossbars or sailed just wide or high. The Rams finished with a 16-to-13 shot advantage and both teams managed three corner kicks.
Conrad led all players with six shots, while Jones paced Charlotte with seven, but only two on net, scoring both.
The 49ers return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they play host to Richmond in another Atlantic 10 contest.
