CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
The Charlotte women's soccer team will begin its final
season as a member of the Atlantic 10 this weekend when it plays host to VCU
and Richmond Friday and Sunday, respectively, at Transamerica Field. The action
begins at 7 p.m. Friday against the Rams and concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday with
the Spiders invading the 49ers' home turf.
"As we head into conference, it's a whole new season," head coach John Cullen
said. "We expect these games to be tight. We are looking forward to two
fantastic teams coming in here this weekend. We want to have positive results
from these two games to take on the road for our five-game stretch."
Charlotte will be looking to extend its current two-game winning streak, as it
closed out the non-conference slate with victories over James Madison and
Francis Marion. The 49ers topped FMU Tuesday night at home 6-0, scoring a
season-best goal total on their way to the fourth shutout of the campaign.
Senior Carrie Dail
paces the squad with four scores after netting a pair
against the Patriots to open the three-match homestand. She has added a pair of
assists to set the tone with 10 points, one more than sophomore Amanda Jones
By recording the contest's first marker, redshirt junior Taylor Rovito
into a tie with Dail and sophomore Sara Trexler
with a team-high two
Junior Alex Kubrick
continues to lead the goalkeepers with 0.54 goals-against
average, although redshirt freshman Annika McHenry
came on in relief Tuesday
and collected four saves to complete the clean sheet.
Charlotte has now outscored its opponents 14-to-9 after the Francis Marion
triumph, using a balanced attack of seven players to score the goals.
VCU enters Friday's action with a 5-2-3 ledger. The Rams will be competing in
their first season as a member of the Atlantic 10, after playing in the
Colonial Athletic Association previously.
VCU is 4-0-2 in its last six games, including road victories over American,
William & Mary and Old Dominion.
Courtney Conrad guides the offense with four goals and eight points, one more
score than Wendy Acosta.
The two teams have met only once previously, in the 2004 Charlotte Classic at
Transamerica Field, with the Rams tallying a 5-1 win.
Richmond will open the weekend in Washington, D.C., Friday afternoon against
George Washington before making the trek to the Queen City. The Spiders are 4-5
entering conference play but each of their triumphs have come in the last five
outings, including back-to-back shutouts.
Becca Wann has tallied four goals and eight points to guide the UR offense,
while Andrea Young has played all but one half in between the pipes for a 1.72
The 49ers are 7-0 all-time against Richmond with the last meeting coming in 2010.
Friday's contest will be Youth Club Night, with free
admission to youth 17 and under.
Also, an end zone tailgate for youth and their families with hot dogs and
hamburgers will be grilled pre-game and available while supplies last. Water
bottles, with the 49ers logo, will be distributed at the gates on a first-come,
first-serve basis, while supplies last.
It's also Alumni Weekend and all alumnae will be recognized prior to the game.
The University is also sponsoring Family Weekend with students and families
participating attending the action.
