Charlotte volleyball suffered a road loss in its Atlantic 10 Conference opener 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) at George Washington Friday night. The 49ers slip to 8-5 overall, 0-1 to start league play. The Colonials are now 4-11 on the season, 1-0 in the A-10.
Charlotte's leading point-scorer, senior Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) led the team with eight kills. She is now just 11 kills away from tenth on the 49ers all-time career list, behind Jessica Oldenburg (2003-07). Freshman Mireya Braxton (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence HS) added seven kills. The 49ers were held to just a .075 attack percentage, with 21 errors in 107 attempts in the three-set match. There were 16 tie scores and seven lead changes in the match. The second set featured eight ties, including at 22-22, but three kills by the Colonials gave the home team the victory in that set.
Senior libero Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) led the team with 13 digs, with Rouse adding a dozen. Senior setter Lily Vera (Anderson, S.C. / Stone Bridge) was limited to 25 assists.
The 49ers will travel to Duquesne Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against the Dukes. Charlotte will play another conference road weekend next week before returning home on Saturday, October 6, against VCU at 7 p.m.
