After finishing the non-conference at 8-4, the Charlotte volleyball program hits the road for the conference-opening weekend, starting with a Friday night match at George Washington at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday match at Duquesne at 1 p.m.
The 49ers lost at GWU in the only meeting between the two teams last year after splitting the pair of matchups in 2010 and 2009. Charlotte has only won once in eight matches all-time in Washington, D.C.
The all-time series versus Duquesne has Charlotte winning six of the nine total meetings, with the teams splitting the pair of season matches in the previous two seasons. Each of the last five meetings versus Duquesne has gone five sets.
Charlotte is ranked second in opponent hitting percentage and second in assists, while third in digs in the Atlantic 10 Conference to this point of the season. Senior setter Lily Vera (Anderson, S.C. / Stone Bridge HS) is tops in the conference with 11.86 assists per set, putting her ninth in the NCAA to this point.
Charlotte has two of the top four players in the conference in kills per set. Senior Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) is third, at 4.02, one of just three players averaging more than four kills per set this season. Junior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) is ranked fourth, at 3.82 kills per set so far this season. Senior Jenna LItoborski (Lemont, Ill.) is fifth in the league, with 4.32 digs per set in 2012.
The Colonials enter conference play at 3-11, winning two of their four home matches so far this season. Senior Lauren Whyte, a two-time all-conference performer, leads the team with 185 kills so far this season.
Duquesne is 11-5 in 2012, with a Friday match against VCU to open conference play. Junior Allison Foschia's 163 kills are tops on the Dukes in the non-conference. Duquesne has won all five home matches so far this season.
NOTES: Volleyball raised over $1,600 at the Sunday Carolina Panthers tailgate as the 11th-Annual Dig Pink Match fundraising efforts are in full swing. Charlotte led the nation for any team raising monies towards Breast Cancer Awareness. The team will make appearances at local restaurants after their next home match, in two weekends.
