HARRISONBURG, Va. - Redshirt junior Taylor Rovito headed
home a corner kick just over four minutes into the first extra frame Sunday
afternoon, providing her Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team a 1-0 road victory
at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
Rovito's score at 94:21, her first of the campaign, came after the two programs battled through a scoreless regulation. With the Dukes seemingly having the advantage early on in the overtime, by taking two shots and a corner kick themselves, it was Charlotte (5-3-1) that broke through with the clinching goal.
On their first solid offensive threat of the period, sophomore Amanda Jones sent a corner kick into the six-yard box. Rovito leaped high to place her head on the pass and placed it between the pipes past James Madison (2-5) goalkeeper Kate Courter to even the all-time series between the two teams at 1-1.
"That was a major win for us today, having come off the disappointing loss at home Thursday night," head coach John Cullen said. "I thought we battled well, competed well."
Junior goalkeeper Alex Kubrick finished with eight saves in preserving her third shutout of the campaign, including a couple key stops Amalya Clayton and Kelly Germain in the overtime session. Kubrick also turned aside a Lauren Wilson attempt in the final 10 minutes of regulation to keep the game deadlocked.
The 49ers seemed to control much of the action during the first half, tallying a 7-4 shot advantage at the break, but the Dukes countered with a 7-3 edge in the second 45 minutes.
Freshman Maddie Kiebel joined Rovito and Jones as Charlotte leaders with two shots apiece; however, Rovito was the lone member of the trio to place both of her attempts on goal.
Wilson paced JMU with four shots, while Germain and Elissa Halik each contributed three attempts at the 49er cage.
Charlotte returns to action in nine days, Tuesday, Sept. 25, when it plays host to Francis Marion at 7 p.m. in the final non-conference contest of the campaign.
