Charlotte, N.C. - Due to inclement weather the majority of singles matches and all the doubles matches were either not finished or were not played on the final day of the 49ers Invitational. The singles matches involving players from Charlotte and Gardner-Webb were not played due to inclement weather. None of the four teams in the Invitational played doubles matches on Sunday either.
"This was a really great fall kick-off event for our team," Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said. "Before the rains came in Sunday, we logged two good days of singles and doubles matches against quality opponents. This tournament gave us a chance to assess our team's physical fitness level, evaluate our new guys in sanctioned match play and work some new doubles combinations. Coming into this event, we've emphasized the importance of doubles development. We wanted to get off to a good start with our doubles play in this event and I'm pleased with our progress so far, as our guys captured seven of eight doubles matches over the weekend. That said we still have to keep working on our fundamentals. I see flashes of solid play from everyone, but we all need to be more consistent."
Charlotte's Jack Williams and Jordi Massalle Ferrer captured their respective flight singles title. Charlotte's doubles teams of Alex Calott and Paul Cisti and Massalle Ferrer and Alex Weber captured their respective doubles titles. Seven 49ers won at least one singles matches. All four of Charlotte's doubles teams won at least one match in the Invitational as well.
"Freshman Jordi Massalle Ferrer had an outstanding weekend, going undefeated in singles and doubles play, teaming with Alex Weber to win Doubles Flight 4," Boykin said. "Jack Williams played better and better as the event stretched out and captured the number one singles flight. The doubles pairings of Alex Calott/Paul Cisti and Kamil Khalil/Krzysztof Kwasniewicz also went undefeated in doubles play this weekend."
Charlotte returns to action when they host Belmont Abbey and Johnson C. Smith in dual matches at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex, Friday, September 28. First, the 49ers play Belmont Abbey at 9 am. Then, the 49ers conclude the day against Johnson C. Smith at 3 pm.
"We're looking forward to getting back out on the practice courts next week," Boykin said.
