CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Anna Ekelund placed third in the
A2 singles flight to lead the Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team this weekend
at the season-opening College of Charleston Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
Ekelund rebounded from a semifinal setback Saturday to hand Stetson's Clarke Tatje a 6-0, 7-6 (0) loss Sunday afternoon to earn the third-place result and give the 49ers their best individual finish of the weekend.
Classmate Ginny Johnson tallied a fourth-place result in the B2 flight despite losing Sunday to the host Cougars' Olivia McMillan.
Freshman Jessica Pérez also finished strong, collecting a fifth-place showing also in the B2 bracket. The Charlotte native from Myers Park High knocked off Davidson's Tamara Hill 6-3, 6-1 to complete her first collegiate tournament.
Sophomore Lisa Grosselius was the only other 49er to post a victory on the tournament's final day, recording a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Davidson's Blake Nickles to finish 15th in the A1 flight.
Earlier in the day, Johnson paired with senior Iveta Guneva for the lone Charlotte doubles triumph. The duo knocked off Davidson's Nickles and Courtney McCray 8-2 in the Round Robin #1 bracket.
The 49ers will return to action with two fall dual matches, welcoming local programs Belmont Abbey and Johnson C. Smith to the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
