In one of the more entertaining matches of the season, Charlotte found itself in a great match against a strong team, but Charlotte couldn't muster enough points in the finishing serves in a 3-1 loss (25-13, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23) Saturday night to finish the Hilton University 49er Invitational at Halton Arena. The 49ers finish the day with a split in two matches and an overall record of 8-4 through non-conference play. Towson is now 11-3 on the year.
Senior Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) was named to the All-Tournament Team, following her seventh double-double of the season. She finished with 15 kills and 10 digs in the nightcap. Junior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) led all players with 18 kills, while a trio of Towson Tigers had 11 kills each.
Charlotte could not match the speed of Towson in the first set, with the Tigers getting up 6-1 early and cruising to the 12-point opening set win.
The 49ers then got in a tussle with the Tigers in the second, with a match-high 12 ties in the frame. Charlotte got kills from freshmen Mireya Braxton (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence HS) and Carly Ochs (Town and Country, Mo. / St. Joseph's Academy) at a 25-all tie to take the set.
Nine more ties and five lead changes later, the third set was tight as well. Tied at 22, the Tigers were able to score three straight points to end the set and take the overall match lead.
The 49ers and Tigers tied 11 more times in the fourth set, with six lead changes, the most of any set of the night. Charlotte held a 23-20 lead in the frame, but gave up the last five points in the loss.
Senior Lily Vera (Anderson, S.C. / Stone Bridge HS) had 47 assists. Senior Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) led all players with 19 digs, with freshman Michelle Hovey adding 13.Charlotte recorded a season-high 12 blocks, with a season-high six coming from Videmsek.
