The Charlotte men's golf program made an four-stroke improvement from rounds one to two as the team opened up the 2012-13 season at the highly competitive Gopher Invitational after a 36-hole day on Sunday. The tournament saw 15 teams, 11 of which earned spots at NCAA Regionals this past spring, compete at the par-72 Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minnesota, a 7,020-yard course, with a pair of holes at 570 yards and longer.

The 49ers posted a +24 (312) in the opening round, led by a four-over 76 from Dan Hendry. Hendry was one of four 49ers to put up a +5 in the second round, as Charlotte improved  +20 (308) in round two. Hendry is one of eight golfers tied at nine over through the first two of three total rounds. He leads the 49ers and is in a tie for 46th overall with the nine-over score, 16 off the pace of California's Max Homa, who is seven under. Two players are in a tie for second at three-under. Only six players were under par after two rounds.

"We didn't play as well as we would have liked and that we had expected to play, but we have tomorrow, said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage. "Today, we missed some shots that weren't very good on a golf course that penalizes shots that are even just a little bit offline. We look forward to playing better in round three."

Junior Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt.) stands at +11, with junior teammate Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga.) posting a pair of six-over par 78s for a +12 total. Sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City, Canada) was at +13. Freshman Riley Davenport (Woodstock, Ga.) made an eight-stroke improvement from round one to round two, posting another of the +5 rounds in the afternoon.

Charlotte will be paired with St. John's of Minnesota, the 16th-ranked team in Division III, and Penn State in the final round, which will begin in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Central Time Monday afternoon. The 49ers, Johnnies and Nittany Lions will start on the last three holes of the course to start the final round.
